The 10th Mountain Division is pictured in this file photo dating back to 1943. The 10th Mountain Division, an elite mountain unit made up of Olympic-caliber skiers, champion ice skaters, mountain climbers, cowboys, and miners, trained at Camp Hale in Colorado. They skied on 7-foot-long wooden skis, snowshoed, rock climbed and built snow caves in anticipation of defending mountainous coastal areas of the United States and besting the enemy in the mountains of Europe.
